A  Japanese university is giving away 500 Apple  iPhones equipped with the GPS tracking system to cut down on truancy in the classroom.  This is a move that was taken by the university after so many students were found skipping class and having their attendance cards filled by others. The school  in Tokyo studies the effect of the Internet on society. Professors will now be able to find out where their students are during class time using this technology.

Would Time and Attendance using mobile phones with GPS technology be an effective way to cut down on truancy in US classrooms as well?

That’s a little freaky to me! I personally believe that there should be a ban on having cell phones in schools! I know it sounds old school, but I know how dependent I am on mine and how distracted i become with it. As a younger person if i had that technology I would never be able to focus on my work because there would be more pressing things in my life with the push of a button! I know the technology is there, and they are trying to find better ways to keep everything in check, but I still think when in school you need to be there 100%, and if you are not then you get an F for the day!

I think it would but I think many people would have privacy concerns. I personally would not mind but I also think that people/students should not only be allowed to choose whether or not they want to be tracked. Also they must not be penalized if they choose not be tracked. Thats my 2 cents.

I think that that both sides of this debate are arguable. I can definitely see how tracking everyone using GPS would be a deterrent to those children who like to skip class although what would stop students from simply leaving they’re phone in the classroom or giving it to a friend who is going to be attending the class. Another major point to be made is the privacy issue. If everyone had a GPS device to track them with it would almost be like we were being followed around everywhere we go every minute of the day, and I know that personally that is not OK with me, and I’m sure there are others that feel the same. As far as the business applications go, I believe this technology can and will substantially revolutionize the time and attendance industry!

I think college kids should be treated like adults and if they don’t want to go to class thats their problem, as long as they pass their exams. I remember missing alot of horribly boring classes and college would have been a terrible experience if someone tracked me down. This sounds like more and more big brother.
